Stanford Heads to Bison Open

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team heads to Fargo, ND this weekend to compete in the 37th annual Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State University. Competition is scheduled to begin on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Bison Sports Arena. The anticipated starting time for the final round is 4 p.m.
The Cardinal is making its first appearance at the open, an event which includes 10 schools from around the country. Junior All-American Tanner Gardner, who picked up his first three wins at the Avalon Duals last weekend, will lead a group of 12 Cardinal wrestlers who are set to compete this weekend. Redshirt freshman Matt Kim and true freshman Jake Johnson will make their first collegiate appearances, while sophomore Tyler Parker and junior Scott Loescher will make their season debuts. Also competing for the Cardinal will be Cameron Teitelman, Josh Zupancic, Brian Perry, Luke Feist, Zack Giesen, Jared Boyer and Phillip Doerner. Sophomore Rafael Chavez will be competing at the Cowboy Open this weekend in Laramie, Wyo.
Highlighting the field is top-ranked Minnesota, a team that has produced 142 individual champions at the Bison Open. The defending national champion Golden Gophers are looking to defend their Bison Open titles, having claimed nine of ten at the event a year ago. The Gophers are led by a pair of 2006 National Champions in sophomore Dustin Schlatter (149 pounds) and senior Cole Konrad (Heavyweight).
Also competing at the event will be North Dakota State, MSU Moorhead, Concordia, Dickinson State, Jamestown College, Mary, Dakota Technical and Community College and Ridgewater Community College.
'This will be a good weekend for us,' said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. 'Our guys should be able to get a bunch of matches and hopefully face some of the nation's top wrestlers. We have to challenge ourselves now so we're ready for March and the No. 1 team in the nation will give us that challenge.'
