Volleyball Downs Oregon State 3-1
Nov. 9, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Thanks to the 29 digs of Sydney Donahue and a balanced offensive attack, the Sun Devil volleyball team knocked off the Oregon State Beavers 3-1 in front of the largest crowd of the season at Wells Fargo Arena. 1,704 gold-clad fans showed up to watch the Devils improve to 12-13 overall, 4-10 in Pac-10 play. The four wins tops last year's conference win total.
ASU came out hot in the opening game, hitting a scorching .393 to pick up a 30-17 win. The second game was a different story, as ten attack errors helped the Beavers bite Arizona State, as OSU evened things up 31-29. Both teams struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the third game, as neither squad hit above .150. The Devils were able to take the game 30-26 to take a 2-1 lead.
The Sun Devils dominated from the outset in game four, jumping out to an early lead and never looking back to claim the game 30-17 and the match. Nicole Morton and Margie Giordano led the way with 12 kills each, while Giordano contributed 15 digs for the double-double. Nina Reeves added 11 kills and Tierra Burnley chipped in with ten.
Sydney Donahue's 29 digs left her four short of tying Christy Nore's school record of 1,597 career digs. She needs only five against the Ducks on Friday night to eclipse the record that was set in 1988.
The Devils and the 24th ranked Ducks will meet on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. The match will follow the ASU/Nebraska women's basketball game.
