Al-Lami, Hooker, Lea Named to All-Pac-10 Team

Nov. 10, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. - California senior midfielder Nadia Al-Lami, junior defender Courtney Hooker and junior defender/midfielder Caroline Lea have been selected second-team All-Pac-10 for the 2006 season, Pac-10 Commissioner Tom Hansen announced on Thursday. Sophomore defender/forward Nkechi Kanu garnered honorable mention all-conference recognition, and freshman midfielder Kelly Menachof was chosen to the first All-Pac-10 Freshman team for women's soccer.

Prior to this year, Al-Lami had been named honorable mention all-conference three times. In 2006, the Santa Cruz product has played every minute of 18 of the Bears' 20 games - including six overtime contests - and continued to show her trademark ballwinning ability. She has posted four points from a game-winning goal vs. Kansas and two assists.

Hooker garnered her third All-Pac-10 accolade this season. As a sophomore, she was tabbed to the first team after being selected to the second team as a freshman. The native of Woodland Hills, Calif., has played all 1902 minutes for the Bears this year, helping them record 12 shutouts and a 0.57 goals-against average.

Lea, who has played every minute of 11 games this year, including the last six contests, has showed her versatility this season. The Lakewood, Colo., product began the year as a starter in Cal's midfielder, but due to injuries, assumed a spot as a starting outside back late in the Pac-10 slate. Lea has recorded four points this year - a game-winning goal against Dayton and an assist in a victory over Boise State.

Kanu was also a dominant fixture on Cal's backline, starting all 19 games she played in this year. Late in the season, the Pleasanton product saw time on the Bears' frontline, as well. In that role, she earned the game-winning assist in the sixth minute of overtime to give the Bears a 1-0 triumph over No. 4 Santa Clara during the final week of the regular season.

Menachof has shown improvement throughout her rookie season, emerging as a starter in five of the Bears' last seven games. A product of Castle Rock, Colo., Menachof has tallied three goals this season, including two vs. Washington and one against Dayton.

Cal (11-4-5) opens the NCAA Tournament tonight against Auburn (11-5-3) at 8 p.m. ET in Tallahassee, Fla.
