Oregon State Opens season with Win Against Portland, 65-48

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Marcel Jones scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds to lead Oregon State to a 65-48 season-opening win over Portland Friday in the Oregon Rain Invitational.
Sasa Cuic added 17 points for the Beavers, who went 13-18 last season.
Jones is the second-leading returning rebounder in the conference. He averaged 9.2 points and 6.7 rebounds last season.
Portland was playing its first regular-season game under new coach Eric Reveno, who comes to the Pilots after nine years on Stanford's staff. Portland State went 11-18 last season.
The Pilots were led by Jamie Jones with 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Beavers' first home victory was their 500th at Gill Coliseum.
Oregon State started brothers Josh Tarver, a redshirt freshman, and Seth Tarver, a true freshman, in the backcourt. It was the first time the Beavers started two freshman guards on opening night since 1996. The last time the Beavers had two brothers start was in 1997-98 when Corey and Sonny Benjamin played.
The Beavers, who led 31-24 at the half, will face Southeastern Louisiana, 76-69 winners over Cal Poly earlier Friday, on Saturday at Gill. Portland will face Cal Poly. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
The Oregon Rain Invitational is the first in-season tournament hosted by Oregon State since the 1959-60 season.
