Cal Men Finish 10th, Women 18th at NCAA West Regional

FAIRVIEW, Ore. - Led by junior David Torrence's 13th-place finish, the California men's cross country team placed 10th with 260 points at the NCAA West Regional Saturday at Blue Lake Park. The Golden Bears women's team took 18th place with 486 points.
Oregon won the men's team title with 69 points, and Stanford claimed the women's crown with 42 points. The Stanford men (88 points) and UC Santa Barbara women (72 points) placed second to earn the other automatic berths out of the West Regional to the NCAA Championships Nov. 20 in Terre Haute, Ind.
Torrence covered the 10K course in 30:34.99 in his first NCAA regional since his 2002 freshman season when he finished 73rd. The product of Reseda, Calif., led Cal in all four races he entered this fall with top 25 performances in each of them, including three top 15 showings.
'David had a very good performance,' said Cal head coach Tony Sandoval. 'It's a credit to him that he was able to get himself eligible this season and that he stayed in shape. He was a man on a mission this fall to prove he belonged.'
Sophomore Mark Matusak placed 37th for the Bears in 31:18.29, followed by sophomore Jake Schmitt in 57th (31:56.32). Freshmen Steve Sodaro and Michael Coe rounded out Cal's scorers in 68th (32:15.62) and 88th (32:51.17) place, respectively. Junior Chris Chavez and sophomore Yosef Ghebray started the race but were forced to withdraw due to illnesses.
Junior Rebecca Yau led all Cal women's runners with a 33rd-place showing, clocking in at 22:24.69 on the 6K course. Yau, who placed 41st at the 2005 NCAA regional, led the Bears over the final five competitions of 2006. Freshman Alison Greggor was the Bears' next fastest runner in 109th (23:40.81). Gabriela Rios-Sotelo (113th, 23:44.27), Pippa Macdonald (124th, 23:54.06) and Rebecca Palm (125th, 23:56.71) also scored for Cal.
Stanford's Neftalem Araia won the men's individual title in 30:05.88, and the Cardinal's Arianna Lambie grabbed first on the women's side (20:58.85).
Torrence will find out Sunday, Nov. 12, if his performace today earned him an at-large berth to the NCAA Championships.
