Cougar Men's Cross Country Team to Compete at NCAA Championships
Nov. 12, 2006
Pullman, Wash. - The Washington State University men's cross country team received an at-large berth Sunday, to compete at the NCAA Cross County Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., November 20, after a ninth place finish at the NCAA West Regionals.
The announcement marks the first Cougar men's team berth since 1998.
The Cougar squad is headlined by junior Alex Grant (Bellingham, Wash.) and sophomore Woody Favinger (Bellingham, Wash.) who placed 23rd and 25th at the NCAA West Regionals. Juniors Andrew Jones (Gillette, Wyo.) and Chris Williams (Federal Way, Wash.) along with sophomore Drew Polley (Port Orchard, Wash.), senior Clay Hemlock (Ferndale, Wash.) and freshman Dan Geib (Reno, Nev.) will also be representing the Cougars.
'The team is very excited to participate as this has been their goal all along,' said Head Coach Jason Drake. 'The announcement was a little bit of a surprise because it is pretty rare to see nine teams in the West Region including six teams from the Pac-10 going to the national championships. We knew it was a very good year in our region. We just weren't sure if the committee would select eight or nine teams, but obviously they selected nine this year.'
WSU's seven-man team received one of 13 at-large bids as selected by the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee. A total of 31 teams are slated to participate in the championships along with 38 individual selections.
'We knew our team had an outside shot at making it to the NCAA Championships,' said men's team captain Alex Grant. 'We all ran great races and exceeded our expectations at regionals. We have definitely had a lot of emotional highs and lows over the last few days and it was such a relief to finally hear the news.'
Indiana State University will host the 2006 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships, November 20, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
