06-07 Men's Track & Field Recruiting Class Ranked No. 1 in the Nation
Nov. 13, 2006
Art Venegas and the UCLA men's track and field program earned a huge honor on Monday, as the 2006-07 recruiting class was named No. 1 in the nation by Track & Field News. The class, comprised of an incredible amount of talent in all event groups, was highlighted by four USA Today All-Americans and finalists for the Track and Field News Athlete of the Year award - David Klech, Darius Reed, Darius Savage and Bo Taylor.
'We are very pleased to have been selected as the No. 1 class in the nation by Track and Field News,' said Venegas. 'It's an honor that reflects on my staff and their tireless devotions to bringing the finest student-athletes to our campus. We are thrilled that it is a broadbased class, with talent in all event fields. We made every effort to bring the finest students as well as athletes into the program. These young men are of the higest caliber academically and we know that they will devote themselves to their college careers with the same or greater commmitment that they did for their high school careers.'
UCLA's class features nationally ranked hurdlers, jumpers, throwers and sprinters, a feat which will help any program garner top honors. After a solid 2006 season which saw the Bruins finish 22nd at the National meet, the outlook for men's track and field only gets brighter because of the addition of these student-athletes.
Venegas knows this class will help bring UCLA back to national prominence and is excited for the upcoming indoor and outdoor track season after a successful cross country campaign, which has seen the Bruin men qualify for the National Championships for the first time in 26 years.
Although youth will be a driving force on this team, it is a talented and deep team that will undoubtedly have success in 2007.
