Nov. 14, 2006
Three Bruin men and women were honored by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association on Tuesday as members of the All-West Region team after impressive performances last weekend at the West Regional Championships in Portland, OR. This year's honorees are senior Ashley Caldwell, sophomore Allie Bohannon and junior Kyle Shackleton.
Shackleton was the men's leader all season long, as he consistently ran in the No. 1 spot for the Bruins. His performances and leadership helped pave the way for an at-large team bid to the National Championships, a feat that had not been achieved in 26 years. Shackleton placed 16th at the West Region meet and 15th at the Pac-10 Championships.
Bohannon led the Bruin women at Regionals with an 11th-place finish, and just missed receiving an individual at-large bid to the National Championships. She was UCLA's No. 1 runner at the West Region meet and Pac-10 Championships. This has been her first full season running cross country for the Bruins, and improved leaps and bounds throughout the year, punctuated by her performance this pass weekend and at Pac-10's.
Caldwell finished 19th at the West Region meet as UCLA's No. 2 runner. She was also the No. 2 finisher for the Bruins at the Pac-10 meet. Prior to Pac-10's, Caldwell had been the No. 1 runner for UCLA, and last season, earned All-American honors in cross country and outdoor track. The men's team will compete in Terre Haute, IN on Monday, November 20th at the NCAA Championships. The women's season came to an end last weekend at Regionals.
