Men's Hoops Takes On Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday Night

SUN DEVIL DATA: The Arizona State University men's basketball team takes on the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Wednesday, Nov. 15, 2006. ASU fell to Big Sky favorite and 21-game winner from last year Northern Arizona 75-71 in the season opener on Monday, as the young Sun Devils started two freshmen, two sophomores and one junior. It will mark the first meeting between the schools. ASU next takes on the Portland State Vikings (1-2) on Saturday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. MT.

IMPRESSIVE FIRST OUTING FOR FRESHMEN DUO: Starting freshmen Jerren Shipp (23 points) and Christian Polk (22 points) posted the two highest scoring openers by ASU freshmen, topping the mark of 18 points set by Jamal Falkner on Nov. 23, 1990, against Kansas. It also marked just the second time in 15 seasons two Sun Devil freshmen started an opener. Eleven freshmen have now started season openers in the past 20 seasons (1987-88 to 2006-07) and just four times in that span a pair of freshmen have earned opening night starts. Monday also marked just the second time in ASU history two freshmen have scored 20 points in the same game, as the only other time was last year on Feb. 11 when Jeff Pendergraph and Sylvester Seay each had 21 against Oregon.

OTHER NOTES FROM MONDAY: ASU's 36 three-point attempts is the most since it shot 36 against Northern Arizona on Dec. 21, 1992, and is tied for the third-most in school history. The school record is 51, set on Dec. 1, 1992, at Brigham Young...ASU's seven free throw attempts was its fewest since it had six at second-ranked Stanford on Feb. 5, 2004...ASU's four freshmen played 89 minutes, with Shipp playing 39, Polk 35, reserve Derek Glasser 14 and George Odufuwa one...Antwi Atuahene had 11 points and seven boards...NAU was 16-of-20 (.800) from the free throw line while ASU was 5-of-7 (.714)...the Nov. 13 start date matched the second-earliest starting date in school history, topped only by the Nov. 10, 2000, 69-67 Tulsa loss in the NABC Classic at Raleigh. It also was Coach Herb Sendek's second-earliest starting date in his 14 years of coaching...ASU has six players on its roster who have scored 20 points in a game, all of them happening in the past year. In addition to Shipp, Polk, Seay and Pendergraph, both Serge Angounou and Antwi Atuahene have notched 20-point games in their careers.

COACH SENDEK: Herb Sendek is 254-159 (.615) in his 14th season as a head coach, including a 191-132 (.591) record at NC State where he went to the NCAA Tournament the past five seasons. He is the second-youngest coach in the Pac-10 (43) behind only first-year mentor Tony Bennett of Washington State (36). He is 42-9 (.824) in November.
