Gardner to Wrestle in All-Star Classic
Nov. 17, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - Stanford junior Tanner Gardner has been invited to wrestle at the 41st annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic, as presented by the United States Marine Corps. Gardner will meet top-ranked Sam Hazewinkel of Oklahoma in the elite bout on Monday.
The All-Star Classic creates an opportunity for two of the top wrestlers in each weight class to compete. This year's Classic will be held on Monday at the Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas. Gardner, ranked fifth nationally at 125 pounds, was selected to replace Troy Nickerson this week, after the Cornell wrestler withdrew due to injury.
Gardner boasts a perfect 7-0 record this season, and captured the Bison Open Championship last weekend at 125 pounds. Gardner became Stanford's 13th All-American last year, finishing eighth at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City.
Hazewinkel, a senior, is currently the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 125 pounds and is the two-time defending All-Star Classic Champion. Last season, he finished third at the NCAA Championships with a 31-2 record.
Monday's appearance will be Gardner's first in the All-Star Classic, and the second all-time for a Cardinal wrestler. In 2003, Matt Gentry competed defeated Jake Percival of Ohio in the Classic, 13-10.
