No. 6 UCLA Sweeps No. 4 USC, 3-0, At Pauley Pavilion

LOS ANGELES - Katie Carter led with 14 kills while Nana Meriwether added 11 kills and hit .348 on the night Friday as the No. 6 UCLA Bruins swept the No. 4 USC Women of Troy, 3-0 (30-25, 30-22, 30-20), in Pac-10 Conference action at Pauley Pavilion. UCLA swept the season series after the Bruins snapped an 11-match losing streak to USC on Oct. 20.
UCLA (26-3, 13-3) also had a .538 night from Rachell Johnson (7-0-13) as the Bruins played physical at the net, outblocking the Women of Troy by a 15-4 margin.
USC (23-4, 12-4) got 18 kills from All-America candidate Asia Kaczor. Senior All-America libero Debora Seilhamer had 22 digs for the Women of Troy while Diane Copenhagen added 12 kills. USC was held to a .139 hitting night in the loss.
Kaczor's five kills early in game one gave USC the 13-7 advantage. The Bruins scored five straight with Carter utilizing a solo block and a kill before Copenhagen stopped it for a 15-12 score for USC. Carter added two more kills capped by a Meriwether kill to force USC to call a timeout, clinging to a 21-20 lead. Down 24-21, the Bruins used another streak with four in a row as Meriwether stuffed Kaczor in the middle as UCLA gained its first lead, 25-24. UCLA kept the Women of Troy off-kilter and finished the game with a 9-1 run to gain the 1-0 lead in the match.
Both teams worked their way to a 10-10 tie in the second game. Carter continued her strong play as her kill gave the Bruins the 16-14 lead. A 7-2 run by the Bruins made it 23-16 as the Women of Troy exhausted its second timeout of the game. UCLA blocked its way to a 2-0 match lead with two blocks at the end of the game.
It was a back and forth affair in the third game before the Bruins took the 15-11 lead. Sather added two more kills as the Bruins cruised to the sweep, outscoring the Women of Troy 15-9 to end the match. UCLA hit .514 in the match with 20 kills against only one hitting error.
USC concludes the 2006 regular season next week with two home matches at Galen Center. The Women of Troy will play Oregon on Friday (Nov. 24) and Oregon State on Saturday (Nov. 25) with both matches beginning at 1 p.m. Live video webcasts for both matches will be available on usctrojans.com.
