Nov. 17, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Twelve members of the Arizona State University cross country program have been selected to one of three Academic All-Pac-10 teams, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Friday. The Sun Devils, which will send athletes to the NCAA Cross Country Championships this weekend, placed seven women and five men on the academic squads for the 2006 season.
The women were led by Brooke Bennett, who earned first team accolades for the second year in a row while capturing her third academic honor from the conference (also earned second-team accolades in 2004). Bennett's selection to the top team gave the Sun Devil women at least one, first-team honoree in seven of the last eight seasons. ASU now has earned 14 first-team selections since 1990.
Jenna Kingma, Corey Randall and Cassie Rios each secured placements on the second team to earn multiple selections for their career. Randall was a first-team honoree last year and second team in 2004 while Rios moved up to the second team after two years of honorable mention accolades. Three other Sun Devils earned honorable mention accolades with Jessie McLaughlin, Whitney Lemieux and Ali Kielty securing the honor. McLaughlin has been an honorable mention selection each of the last three seasons while Lemieux has attained the same honor the past two seasons. Kielty is making her first appearance on the list.
On the men's side, Kal Clark earned first-team honors for the third year in a row and extended the men's streak to four years in a row with having at least one first-team selection. The men now have accumulated 10 first-team honors in the history of the program with the first coming in 2000 and the remaining nine over the course of the past four seasons (one each in 2003 and 2006, three in 2004 and four in 2005).
David Gott and Joey Heller were selected to the second team with Gott earning his first academic honor from the conference while Heller earned his second accolade after being an honorable mention selection in 2005. Eric Dall and David Mehlhorn rounded out the men's selections as both earned honorable mention honors for the second season in a row.
Overall, the Sun Devil women have seen 50 different student-athletes earn 14 first-team honors, 16 second-team honors and 50 honorable mention honors while the men have seen 26 different individuals collect 10 first-team, 10 second-team and 29 honorable mention selections.
