Call Falls to Virginia, 2-1, in Third Round of College Cup

Nov. 18, 2006

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Thirteenth-seeded California fell to fourth-seeded Virginia, 2-1, in the third round of the NCAA College Cup at Klockner Stadium. The Golden Bears end their season with a 13-6-1 record, while the Cavaliers improved to 16-3-1 and move on to face Notre Dame in the quarterfinal round.

In the 74th minute, a Virginia corner kick resulted in a header by Bakary Soumare that cleared the crossbar. Virginia forward Yannick Reyering intercepted Cal goalkeeper Justin Myers' resulting goalkick, dribbled into the Cal box around an onrushing Myers and scored with a 12-yard shot from a difficult angle.

Virginia tied the game at 1-1 in the 65th minute. Myers punched a UVa cross out to Cavaliers midfielder Nico Colaluca, who passed the ball to Reyering. The German sophomore slotted the ball past Myers from four yards for his team-leading 10th goal of the year.

Virginia created several dangerous chances in the first half, when the Cavaliers outshot the Bears, 10-8. In the 12th minute, midfielder Jonathan Villanueva stole the ball in midfield and dribbled towards the Cal penalty area, before passing to Reyering at the top of the box. He fired a rocket that went just wide of the far post.

Junior defender Jeff Serafini put Cal ahead in the 30th minute with his first goal of the season. Before the goal, Virginia midfielder Zola Short fouled senior midfielder Nick Hatzke, earning a yellow card and setting up a free kick for the Bears in the process. Cal senior defender Steve Purdy bent the 20-yard free kick around the Cavaliers' wall. Goalkeeper Ryan Burke punched the ball outside the box but right to Serafini, who first-timed his shot to score from 22 yards out.

The goal was just the third of Serafini's career; the defender scored two last season.

A full recap and the box score will follow.
