No. 2 Stanford Captures Speedo Cup For Fourth Straight Year

Long Beach, Ca - For the fourth straight year, the nationally-ranked Stanford men's swimming team has captured the Speedo Cup Championship at the Belmont Plaza Pool. The Cardinal tallied 1,803.5 points over three days of the meet to beat 15 other teams including runnerup Brigham Young. BYU collected 911 points.

On Saturday, Stanford captured first place honors in all five events. Stanford winners were Hongzhe Sun in the 200 back (1:43.30), Nate Cass in the 200 breast (1:57.68), Daniel Beal in the 200 fly (1:47.91), Ben Wildman-Tobriner in the 100 free (43.92, tied meet record set by UCLA's Brian Kurza in 1992), and Shaun Phillips in the 1650 free (14:58.61, meet record; old record was 15:14.57 set by Phillips in 2004). Stanford went 1-2-3-4-5 in the 200 breast. Wildman-Tobriner won the 100 free and Phillips won the 1650 free for the fourth year in a row. Sun won the 200 back for a third straight year. Beal captured the 200 fly for a second straight year.

Several Stanford divers competed at the Hoosier Invitational at the University of Indiana. On Saturday, Dwight Dumais finished in sixth place in one-meter diving with a score of 310.65 points. Nathan Kim was 18th with 215.55 points.
