Nov. 19, 2006
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - Ivan Radenovic scored 25 points and had 12 rebounds and Jawann McClellan scored a career-high 22 points, and No. 15 Arizona held off upset-minded New Mexico State 102-87 Sunday afternoon.
Arizona led by as many as 21 points in the second half. But New Mexico State closed to within 87-82 on a three-pointer by Ted Knauber with 4 minutes to go. Arizona scored the next five points to pull away.
Marcus Williams scored 20 points and Chase Budinger added 19 points for Arizona, which shot 57.1 percent from both the floor and from three-point range.
McClellan hit 7-of-7 three-pointers. His only misses came on two shots inside the arc.
McClellan, a junior guard, missed most of last season due to academic ineligibility and a wrist injury. But he came out firing against the Aggies, knocking down three three-pointers to spark a 25-0 run that gave Arizona a 32-8 lead midway through the first half.
The Aggies went nearly eight minutes without a point, missing eight straight shots. But they responded with a 21-8 run to pull within 47-33 at halftime.
Fred Peete scored 18 and Martin Iti went 8-for-8 from the floor and scored 16 points for the Aggies (1-2), who had six players in double figures.
