Shay Murphy Breaks 1,000-Point Barrier
Nov. 19, 2006
USC senior guard Shay Murphy had no idea. Sure, she'd been scoring in double-figures for 27 straight games, but the specific numbers never registered, and they certainly weren't being added up in her mind. So when Murphy learned that she had joined the elite company of 19 other USC women's basketball stars by breaking the 1,000 career point mark, Murphy was more shocked than anyone else on that airport-bound bus.
Murphy came into the season with 956 career points. She drilled 21 in USC's opener against Long Beach State, and then came away with 23 at South Dakota State on Nov. 17 -- hitting the 1,000-point mark on the money. In Sunday's game at Ohio State, the hot-handed guard drained 19 points, pushing her career total to 1,019 to rank her No. 18 all-time in career scoring.
'We're very proud of Shay,' head coach Mark Trakh said of his standout senior. 'She's established herself as one of the top players in the country. We're very happy that all her hard work has paid dividends the past two years. She has earned this place in USC's history books.'
Murphy is now one of 20 Trojans to score 1,000 points at USC. A WBCA/Kodak All-America honorable mention recipient as a junior, Murphy is on the Wade Watch List and is a John R. Wooden Award preseason candidate.
Murphy and the Women of Troy now return home to host Notre Dame and Nebraska this weekend at the Galen Center.
