Nov. 21, 2006
LOS ANGELES - UCLA head men's tennis coach Billy Martin announced the signing of three U.S. junior players to national letters of intent on Tuesday. Joining the Bruins in 2007 are Southern California products Nicolas Meister, Ahmed Ismail and Christopher Ho.
'We're obviously excited to have these three players join our team next year,' said Martin, who is entering his 14th season as head coach. 'All three are talented local players who are eager to step in and provide depth to our lineup.'
Meister, from Trabuco Canyon, Calif. (Tesoro HS), recently captured the 18s title at the Southern California Junior Sectionals in June. A two-time All-Orange County selection, he won the Pacific Coast League singles title in 2006. He was also a quarterfinalist at the CIF-Southern Section individual tournament. Meister, who was ranked in the top-10 nationally of the USTA Boys' 16s division, has competed in such tournaments as the Orange Bowl, Easter Bowl and USTA National Hardcourts.
Ismail, who trains at the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, Calif., is one of 22 U.S. players who will be competing at the upcoming Orange Bowl Championships this December in Key Biscayne, Fla. He competed in both singles and doubles at the Easter Bowl Championships in Palm Springs, Calif., reaching the round of 16 in doubles (w/Bozidar Katsarov). He is listed in the top-300 of the ITF World Junior Rankings.
Ho, from Santa Barbara, Calif. (Santa Barbara HS), captured the CIF Doubles Championship (w/Billy Grokenberger) at the prestigious Ojai Valley Tennis Tournament this past April after reaching the finals in 2005. He is a three-time Channel League doubles champion, helping Santa Barbara capture the National High School Invitational All-American Tournament in 2005.
