Sun Devil Soccer Honored with Individual Academic Awards
Nov. 21, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Six members of the Arizona State University soccer program earned academic honors Tuesday including awards from the Pac-10 Conference and the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). While all six student-athletes earned a place on the Academic All-Pac-10 lists, only GK Kim Bingham attained national acclaim from CoSIDA.
Following her stellar senior season on the field, Bingham was honors by CoSIDA as an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Third Team selection after being chosen to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VIII First Team three weeks ago. Bingham, who carried a 3.90 GPA in marketing and psychology, earned her first Academic All-America honor and was one of only three goal keepers selected to the status (one for each team, first, second and third).
Bingham's national honor made her just the fourth different Sun Devil to achieve Academic All-America status from CoSIDA and is the second student-athlete to be named to the third team. ASU first landed a student-athlete on the list in 2002 when Amy LePeilbet garnered third-team accolades. She followed that with a first-team selection in 2003. Then, in 2004, Holly Azevedo (first team) and Manya Makoski (second team) each were honored by CoSIDA.
On the conference level, Bingham and Kyleyn Felts both earned Academic All-Pac-10 First Team honors, making them just the third and fourth Sun Devils to earn placement on the first team more than once in their careers. Bingham's selection is the third of career, tying her with LePeilbet (2001-2002-2003) as the only Sun Devils to have earned first team accolades all three years they were eligible. Felts and Kerrie Kulak (1997-1998) are the other two Sun Devils to earn multiple first team honors as both have attained the status twice.
Alissa Oldenkamp earned her second career academic honor from the Pac-10 as she was selected to the second team while Lara Kezer and Lauren Niblett both earned their second honors as well by being named to the honorable mention list. The duo earned first team and honorable mention accolades, respectively, in 2005. The final Sun Devil on the lists this year is Kylla Sjoman, who's honorable mention selection is the first accolade of her career.
