Pendergraph, ASU's top returning scorer and rebounder, scored eight of the first 17 points for the Sun Devils (2-2).
ASU coach Herb Sendek benched Polk, his leading scorer, for the first time this season, putting him into the lineup three minutes into the game. Polk, a freshman playing his fourth college game, responded with 11 points in 14 minutes.
Polk, who came into the game with nearly twice as many shots as the next-highest Sun Devil, hit 6-of-15 shots from the floor. He was averaging 40.4 percent from the floor and 28 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
Jamon Hill, Harry Brown and Menelik Barbary each scored 12 points for San Jose State (0-4).
Leading 30-29 at halftime, the Sun Devils opened the second half on an 14-5 run. Freshman Jerren Shipp scored seven points during the run.
