Three Bears Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Honors

Nov. 21, 2006

BERKELEY - California senior forward Matt Holtrust earned a spot on the Pac-10 All-Academic men's soccer second team and senior midfielder Nick Hatzke and sophomore midfielder Michael Nieraeth earned honorable mention conference honors, Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hansen announced this week.

Holtrust, a reserve forward from Mission Viejo, Calif., has a 3.31 grade-point average as a political science major. He played in a career-high 14 games this year and scored in a 3-0 win against FIU on Sept. 1 and a 5-0 rout of Oregon State on Oct. 6. Like Hatzke, Holtrust concluded his Cal career with the Bears' 2-1 loss to Virginia in the third round of the College Cup last Saturday in Charlottesville, Va.

Hatzke, a fifth-year senior from San Jose, Calif., made a strong return from an injury redshirt season in 2005-06, adding a 2006 honorable mention All-Pac-10 selection to his Pac-10 academic honor. He was Cal's third-leading scorer (9 points) and converted Cal's only two penalty kicks this year.

Nieraeth, a reserve midfielder from Lakewood, Calif., provided good energy off the bench, playing in all 20 games and starting three.
