No. 14 Cal Volleyball Defeats Washington State, 3-0

BERKELEY, CALIF. - Led by 13 kills from junior middle hitter Ellen Orchard, 12 kills from junior Angie Pressey and 11 kills from sophomore Morgan Beck, the No. 14-ranked California women's volleyball team defeated visiting Washington State, 3-0 (30-23, 30-17, 30-22) Friday night at Haas Pavilion. The Golden Bears improved to 20-8 overall and 9-8 in the Pac-10, while the Cougars dropped to 15-16 and 3-14 in conference.
Cal's 20 victories this season is only the sixth time in school history the Bears have captured 20 or more victories in a season. Under current head coach Rich Feller, Cal went 20-12 in 2002 and 25-7 in 2003.
The Bears out-hit the Cougars .301 to .145 for the contest with Orchard hitting .435 (13k, 3e, 23att) and Pressey hitting .370 (12k, 2e, 27att). Beck finished with a team-high five block assists and senior Natalie Smart hit 1.000 for the match with five kills and no errors in five attempts. Senior setter Samantha Carter paced Cal with 42 assists and senior libero Jillian Davis added a team-high 13 digs. Beck and Carter had two service aces apiece for the Bears as well.
WSU was led by Adetokunbo Faleti's nine kills, and Kelly Hyder had a match-high 18 digs.
Cal will next host No. 2-ranked and defending national champion Washington on Saturday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Bears' final regular-season match at Haas Pavilion. It will also be the final home matches for Cal seniors Carter, Davis, Smart and Vivian Cheung.
