Nov. 24, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - In search of their first winning season since 2002, the Arizona State Sun Devils took care of business against their in-state rival on Friday night, sweeping the Arizona Wildcats to finish the regular season 15-14, 7-11 in the Pac-10. ASU won both meeting against Arizona for the first time since 1995.
The 1,607 at Wells Fargo Arena saw a pre-game ceremony honoring the three seniors, Nicole Morton, Nina Reeves and Tierra Burnley before enjoying the Sun Devils defeat the Wildcats for the second straight time.
The Sun Devils came out determined in the opening game on Senior Night, jumping out to an early lead on the Cats and never looking back on their way to a 30-23 win. The Wildcats responded in game two, keeping it close in the early going. But the play of senior Nina Reeves thwarted the Wildcats attempt to tie things up, as the Devils won handily 30-21, going on a late run to win going away.
After the intermission, Brad Saindon and his squad would not be denied. Smelling a potential NCAA Tournament berth, the Sun Devils dispatched Arizona 30-24 to win the match and place them firmly in the hunt for a postseason berth.
Now Arizona State, who finished 8-20 a season ago, will wait until Sunday to learn their postseason fate. The NCAA Tournament brackets will be announced at 1 p.m. Arizona time on Sunday afternoon live on ESPNews. The bracket will also be announced on NCAASports.com.
