WE'RE IN!!! Volleyball Selected for NCAA Tournament
Nov. 26, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - For the first time since 2002, the Arizona State Sun Devils volleyball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament. The Sun Devils will open the 2006 NCAA Tournament in Gainesville, Florida, taking on College of Charleston in the first round. The match will be on Thursday, with a start time to be announced.
'When we saw ASU on the board, everyone went nuts,' said Head Coach Brad Saindon from the team viewing party. 'We are so happy. I am particularly happy for the three seniors on our team. I think we got a great draw, heading to Gainesville. I don't know much about the College of Charleston, but I know that we are a hardened team after the Pac-10 season. We are all very excited about the opportunity.'
The Devils clinched a winning regular season and a shot at the tournament when they swept Arizona on Friday night in Tempe.
'It's nice to end my career with a postseason berth,' said senior Nina Reeves. 'I'm so excited I can hardly think. We are all excited to have a chance to be in this tournament. I wasn't ready for the season to be over, and I am so happy that we can continue playing. It never sank in that the Arizona match on Friday could have been my final one, and I am glad that it wasn't.'
Head coach Brad Saindon and the Sun Devils ended the regular season at 15-14, winning four of their last five matches to earn a tournament berth. They finished tied for sixth with Oregon in the Pac-10, their best conference finish since a fifth place in 2000. The Sun Devils faced eleven teams who advanced to the NCAA Tournament this season, including six of the 16 national seeds.
The Pac-10 sent seven teams to the 2006 NCAA Tournament (Stanford, California, Arizona State, Washington, Oregon, USC and UCLA), including four national top 16 seeds. The Pac-10 has won the previous five national championships.
