Nov. 27, 2006
TEMPE, Ariz. - Arizona State redshirt freshman setter Marina Mercer has been named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman Team, the conference announced today. In addition, senior outside hitter Nicole Morton and junior libero Sydney Donahue have been named Honorable Mention All-Pac-10.
Mercer, from Chandler, Ariz., leads the team with her 1,070 assists this season. It is the highest total for a Sun Devil since 2001. She is averaging 10.29 assists per game. This marks the second straight season ASU has landed a student-athlete on the All-Freshman Team, as Margie Giordano earned the honor last season.
Donahue was an honorable mention for the second straight year. The Manhattan Beach, Calif. product is in the midst of a record setting junior season. Her 695 digs are a school single-season record, and her 1,698 career digs are also tops all-time in Sun Devil history. Donahue leads the Pac-10 in total digs and in digs per game (6.62). She is 13 away from tying the all-time Pac-10 single season record.
Morton (Fallbrook, Calif.) also earned an honorable mention for the second straight season. She is second on the team with 331 kills, an average of 3.21 per game.
The Sun Devils will open the 2006 NCAA Tournament on Thursday in Gainesville, Florida when they face College of Charleston in the opening round. The match will begin at 3 p.m. Arizona time.
