Ali Kielty Named Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year for Cross Country

Nov. 28, 2006

TEMPE, Ariz. - Ali Kielty, a freshman member of the Arizona State University cross country team, was named the 2006 Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced Tuesday. Just the third Sun Devil to earn the award, Kielty had a hand in helping the women advance to their ninth-consecutive NCAA Championships this fall after taking runner-up honors at the Pac-10 meet for the fifth year in a row.

Kielty, who competed in her first year after redshirting the 2005 season, was the top freshman finisher in the women's race, placing 13th overall in 21:10.0. Her placement also earned her a place on the All-Pac-10 Second Team. From there, she finished 21st at the NCAA West Region Championships to earn All-Region accolades before placing 68th at the NCAA Championships as the second Sun Devil across the line.

A native of Torrance, Calif., Kielty is the second Sun Devil female and third Sun Devil overall to be honored as the conference' Newcomer of the Year. Jessica Scalzo was the first female recipient from ASU, securing the honor in 2002. One year before that, J.J. Duke was selected for the men's award.

Overall, the award earned by Kielty was the seventh in the history of the ASU program and the sixth for the women. Along with the three newcomer honors, other award winners included Amy Hastings (2004) and Lisa Aguilera (2000) as the Pac-10 Athlete of the Year while former head coach Walt Drenth was selected as the women's Coach of the Year in both 1999 and 2000.
