Washington Recruits Shine At U.S. Open

Nov. 30, 2006

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind.-- University of Washington swimming recruits performed well Thursday morning in the preliminary races at the U.S. Open on the campus of Purdue University. Russell Mahan and Ariana Kukros combined for three top-20 finishes and Kukors advanced to tonight's final in the 200 IM and 200 backstroke.

Mahan, a current swimmer with the Bellevue Club, placed 18th overall in this morning's prelim with a long course time of 1:05.79 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Kukors, a current swimmer with King County Aquatics, placed sixth in the 200-meter IM (2:18.12) and seventh in the 200-meter backstroke (2:17.37). Both times were fast enough for Olympic Trial cuts and advance Kukors to the finals later tonight.

Mahan and Kukors will be freshmen at the University of Washington next fall.
