Zach Miller Named a Finalist for the 2006 Mackey Award

Arizona StateUniversity junior tight end Zach Miller has been named a Finalist for the 2006 John Mackey Award, The Nassau County Sports Commission (NCSC) announced Thursday. The award is presented annually to the nation's top tight end.  The other two Finalists are John Carlson(JR, Notre Dame) and Matt Spaeth (SR, Minnesota).

The three finalists were determined by confidential balloting of the John Mackey Selection Committee. The 2006 recipient of 'The Mackey' will be announced on December 7, 2006, at the Home Depot College Football Awards Show live on ESPN and presented at the Nassau County Sports Commission Annual Awards Dinner on April 30, 2007.

The John Mackey Award is given to the collegiate tight end who best exemplifies the play, sportsmanship, academics and community values of NFL Hall of Fame Tight End John Mackey. The Nassau County Sports Commission is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization that promotes sports and healthy lifestyle for NassauCounty residents and is responsible for the administration of the John Mackey Award and the John Mackey Award Selection Committee.

The Phoenix, Ariz., native has been selected as a Second-Team All-American by Rivals.com, a First-Team All-Pac-10 Conference selection and an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American.

On the season, Miller leads ASU in receptions (49), receiving yards (481 and touchdown catches (four), and is the school's all-time leading receiver among tight ends.

Former Sun Devil All-American and current Baltimore Ravens All-Pro tight end Todd Heap was a finalist for the 2000 Mackey Award, and during his three years in Tempe, Miller has surpassed Heap and stands as ASU's all-time leader at tight end in receptions (143) and touchdown catches (14).


Miller and the Sun Devils will close out the 2006 season against the Hawai'i Warriors in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Dec. 24, ASU's third consecutive bowl game appearance.
