Bears Sign Newcomer for Next Season
Dec. 1, 2006
BERKELEY - California women's tennis coach Jan Brogan announced that Marina Cossou, a French singles and doubles champion among girls 16 and under (G16), has signed a letter of intent and will join the Golden Bears next season.
A native of Paris, France, Cossou was a member of the French federation national training program, a program that current Cal players, Claire Ilcinkas and Marion Ravelojaona participated in. Cossou started competing at the age of seven and was in the top five for her age group.
In addition to her singles and doubles championships in the G16, she also won a championship in the G14. Cossou, who was heavily recruited by UCLA, Florida and Miami, was selected to play for France in the world team championships.
'She's a consistent baseliner, a top-tier player and an excellent doubles player,' Brogan said.
The women's tennis team produced two champions in 2006, as sophomore Suzi Babos won the NCAA singles championship and junior Zsuzsanna Fodor took the Pac-10 singles crown. Both were selected as 2006 All-Americans, bringing to 54 the number of all-time All-Americans in Cal women's tennis history. The Golden Bears ended the 2005-2006 women's tennis season ranked No. 13 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
