Dec. 3, 2006
LOS ANGELES (AP) -Jeff Tyrrell scored as time expired Sunday to lift California to its 12th NCAA men's water polo championship with a 7-6 victory over Southern California.
USC's Thomas Hale had scored with 2 seconds remaining to tie the match at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center at Loyola Marymount. After the Golden Bears took their final timeout, Spencer Warden took the entry pass and fed Tyrrell, whose shot was deflected by a defender into the goal's top-right corner.
Brian Bacharach had two goals for the Bears (31-4) and Juan Delgadillo had two for the Trojans (26-2). Cal trailed 4-2, but scored four straight goals for a 6-4 lead. USC came back on a goal by J.W. Krumpholz with 2:40 remaining and Hale's goal.
UC San Diego beat Navy 12-8 earlier Sunday in the third-place match. Ty Lackey scored five goals and Nestor Dordoni added three for the Tritons (26-6). Aaron Recko, Tyler Hill and Bram Arnold had two goals each for Navy (24-7).
Cal goalie Mark Sheredy was MVP of the four-team, two-day tournament.
