WALNUT, Calif. - Three members of Washington's freshman class of 2007 earned top-10 finishes Saturday at the Foot Locker West Region Cross Country Championships in Walnut, Calif., each earning berths at the Foot Locker National Championships in San Diego this Saturday.
Reno (Nev.) High School senior Marie Lawrence, who last week signed a letter-of-intent to compete for Washington next fall, was the second overall finisher in the 5,000-meter girls' race, her time of 17 minutes, 55 seconds just 12 seconds back of Arroyo Grande, Calif., sophomore Jordan Hasay. Fellow Husky signee Lauren Saylor, a senior at Buchanan High School in Fresno, Calif., placed fifth in the women's race in 18:29, while Seattle Prep senior Max O-Donoghue-McDonald was sixth in the 5,000-meter men's race in
The top-eight finishers at the West Regional qualified for Saturday's Foot Locker Cross Country Championships National Finals in San Diego, considered by many the unofficial national championship of prep cross country. They will be joined by the top-10 finishes from the other three regionals, and the top-two finishers from Saturday's Nike Team Nationals.
Widely regarded the nation's top female distance recruit in the class of 2007, Lawrence will be seeking her first Foot Locker national title after second-place finishes at each of the past three Foot Locker National Championship meets. Saylor and O-Donoghue-McDonald will each be making their first-career Foot Locker Nationals appearances.
'The Foot Locker Nationals are the best-of-the-best in prep distance running, so it's exciting to have all three of those folks in that meet,' said head coach Greg Metcalf. 'We'll be cheering for them Saturday, and can't wait to have them on campus next fall.'
