Bruins Deal Irvine 66-62 Loss
Dec. 4, 2006
UCLA used a 21-point, 10-rebound effort by senior guard Noelle Quinn to deal host UC Irvine a 66-62 setback in the Bren Events Center. Senior guard Shaina Zaidi added 12 points off the bench for the Bruins who improved their record to 5-4 on the year.
UCLA held a 35-32 advantage at the break after a closely contested first half of action. The Bruins upped the margin to 60-46 with 8:07 to play on the second of two straight three-point shots from Zaidi.
UCI responded with a 10-0 run to close the gap to 60-56 with 5:23 to go. Two free throws from Quinn at the 4:26 mark and one of two free throws by Zaidi with 3:58 to play pushed it back up to 63-56 in favor of the Bruins. The Anteaters then stole the ball on two possessions, first from Quinn, and then from Zaidi and converted both defensive plays into baskets to reduce the Bruin margin to just three, 63-60, with 1:34 to play in the contest.
Quinn missed a shot in the lane on UCLA's next possession and Irvine called timeout with 51 seconds remaining. Bruin sophomore center Chinyere Ibekwe then stole the ball and Irvine fouled junior forward Lindey Pluimer with 36 seconds on the clock. Pluimer missed the first attempt in the double bonus, but converted the second shot which gave UCLA a 64-60 lead.
UC Irvine missed a shot inside with 25 seconds to play and the rebound went to the Anteaters after a jump ball was called with 20 seconds on the clock. Irvine again missed a shot in the paint, but the rebound went out of bounds off of a UCLA player with 14.4 seconds showing on the scoreboard. After inbounding the ball, Irvine misfired on a pass attempt which went out of bounds to UCLA with 10.6 seconds on the clock.
UCLA inbounded the ball to Zaidi who was fouled with 10.0 seconds to play. The Bruin senior sank both ends of the double bonus situation from the line to put UCLA up by six, 66-60. Irvine was fouled with 0.3 seconds on the clock and hit two free throws for the final margin.
Pluimer finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. Ibekwe pulled down 11 boards for the Bruins. UCLA won the battle of the boards 51-42 and outshot the Anteaters .434 to .306.
UCLA will play next on Friday night in a first round matchup of the University of New Mexico's Lobo Classic against Delaware State (5 p.m. Pacific).
