U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week

UCLA guard/forward Josh Shipp has been named the U.S. Bank Pacific-10 Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for November 27-December 3.

Shipp, a sophomore from Los Angeles, Calif., averaged 17.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists in leading the Bruins to a pair of victories last week. He opened the week with a career-high 24 points, hitting 6-of-9 from three-point range, in the 88-58 win over Long Beach State. He also added seven rebounds and a career-best tying five assists. Shipp followed that performance by scoring 10 points in a 61-38 win over UC Riverside, who employed a slow-down offense, holding the ball near halfcourt for the first 20 seconds of every possession.

This is the first weekly honor for Shipp and UCLA's 44th Player of the Week all-time.

• The Pac-10 saw its streak of consecutive non-conference victories end at 28 last week, but still boast an impressive 55-13 (.809) record in non-league action ... Sixteen different freshmen around the Pac-10 have earned at least one start this season.

• ARIZONA starters accounted for all 84 points in its win over Illinois ... Freshman F Chase Budinger continues to have the hot hand for the Wildcats. After posting his first double-double with 15 points/11 rebounds in a win over UNLV earlier in the week, Budinger posted team-highs with 22 points and eight rebounds in the win over Illinois ... Senior G Mustafa Shakur has posted six or more assists in each game this season, with eight or more in four games, including a season-high 11 assists vs. UNLV ... Arizona takes on Louisville in the Jimmy V Classic in Madison Square Garden. Coach Lute Olson has taken the Cats to New York on several occasions and boasts a 10-1 record in the Garden. His only setback was in last appearance in New York, a 63-60 loss to Wake Forest in the finals of the 2004-05 Preseason NIT.

• ASU almost pulled off another comeback win at Minnesota in its 66-63 loss on Saturday. A week after outscoring Iowa 19-4 in the final six minutes to win 67-64, the Sun Devils outscored the Gophers 23-7 in the final 7:38 and held Minnesota without a field goal in that time, but still fell 66-63 ... Senior F Serge Angounou is averaging 11.0 points and 11.7 boards in the past three games. He also is 7-of-19 (.368) from the three-point stripe this year after shooting 6-of-33 (.182) in his first three seasons ... ASU had 22 offensive boards vs. Northern Colorado on Nov. 28, its most since it had 25 vs. Valparaiso on Dec. 29, 2004, a span of 54 games ... ASU is off for final exams until a Dec. 16 game at defending Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Xavier. ASU assistant Archie Miller is the younger brother of Xavier head coach Sean Miller.

• In its six wins this season, CALIFORNIA is limiting the opposition to 36.8 percent shooting from the floor and 56.5 points per game ... None of Cal's three opponents to play in Haas Pavilion have reached 50 points yet - Utah Valley State (47), Santa Clara (48) and Kansas State (48) ... In his last four games, senior G Ayinde Ubaka has 24 assists and only six turnovers ... The Bears are making the most of their opportunity at the free throw line connecting on 114-of-136 (.838). Junior C DeVon Hardin, a 38.6 percent shooter as a freshman two years ago, is shooting 26-of-31 (.839) this season. Freshman F Ryan Anderson has connected on 18 consecutive free throw attempts and is shooting 29-of-35 (.829) from the charity stripe.

• OREGON junior G Malik Hairston made his season debut in the Ducks' 57-50 upset victory at No. 18 Georgetown. He came off the bench to score eight points and pulled down six rebounds. Hairston led the Ducks in scoring last season, averaging 15.0 points per game ... The victory over Georgetown is the first-ever road win by the Ducks over a ranked non-conference opponent on the opponent's court ... Coach Ernie Kent is 4-4 against ranked non-conference opponents ... Senior G Aaron Brooks has 974 points, 26 away from becoming the 25th member of Oregon's 1,000-point club ... Oregon looks to go 7-0 for the first time under coach Ernie Kent, and the first time since the 1996-97 squad opened up the season 10-0.

• OREGON STATE junior F Marcel Jones has led the Beavers in scoring in five of eight games this season. He's posted double digits in each of the last four games, averaging 21.3 points during that span ... The Beavers are in the midst of a nine-game homestand and won't return to the road until a Jan. 11 contest at Arizona ... Junior F Sasa Cuic was reinstated after serving a two-game suspension and responded with a team-high 17 points and added six rebounds in the loss to Fresno State. He hit a career-high four three-pointers ... In its four wins, Oregon State is shooting 104-of-228 (.457) from the field. In their four losses, the Beavers are shooting 88-of-240 (.367) from the field.

• STANFORD freshman F Brook Lopez made his debut against UC Davis, but played only four minutes. However, in the 70-59 win over Texas Tech, he posted 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting in 17 minutes ... Sophomore F Lawrence Hill tallied his first career double-double with 20 points/11 rebounds in Stanford's win over UC Davis. Over the last four games, Hill is averaging 17.8 points on 28-of-46 (.609) shooting, and averaging 7.5 rebounds ... The Cardinal defense has clamped down on the opposition lately. Over the last three games, opponents are shooting 60-of-162 (.370) against Stanford ... The Cardinal are second in the league in rebound margin (+9.4).

• UCLA sophomore G Darren Collison collected a career-high nine steals in the win over Long Beach State. Only three other players in Pac-10 history have recorded more steals in a game - Tyus Edney, UCLA (11); Brevin Knight, Stanford (10); Jeff Trepagnier, USC (10). Collison leads the Pac-10 in steals, averaging 3.17 per game ... UCLA's frontline starters have combined to shoot 67-of-116 (.578) from the field. Junior C Lorenzo Mata hit just 2-of-6 from the field in the season opener, but has hit 17-of-24 (.708) from the field over the last five games ... The last time the Bruins started the year 6-0 was during their 1995 national championship season.

• After dropping its season-opener in overtime, USC has won five straight ... Trojans have been applying tough defense. They are second in the nation field goal percentage defense (.313), trailing only Texas A&M (.307), and have held each opponent under 40 percent. USC's last three opponents have combined to shoot 50-of-185 (.270) ... Senior G Lodrick Stewart nailed a career-best six three-pointers in scoring 21 points in USC's win over Loyola Marymount. He's fifth on USC's career list with 167 three-point field goals and needs 10 to move into the top three ... USC's game at Kansas is the only non-conference road game on the schedule for the Trojans. USC has neutral site games planned for Anaheim (George Washington) and Las Vegas (Kansas State and New Mexico or Wichita State).

• WASHINGTON freshman F Quincy Pondexter is averaging 20.7 points and 8.3 rebounds over the last three games ... Freshman G Adrian Oliver earned his first start of the season in the win over Idaho. He scored seven points, grabbed two rebounds and dished out a pair of assists. He's the third different freshman to start for the Huskies this season. In fact, the Husky starting lineup against Idaho featured three freshmen and two sophomores ... The Huskies have won 23 consecutive regular season non-conference games, including all 11 games last season outside Pac-10 play. The last loss was a 99-87 setback at Gonzaga on Dec. 1, 2005.

• WASHINGTON STATE coach Tony Bennett was the first head coach at a current Pacific-10 institution to start 7-0 in his inaugural campaign at the school since Stanford's Robert W. Burnett was 9-0 in 1951-52...Bennett's accomplishment is tied for the third best start in a debut season at Pac-10 school in the post-World War II era ... The Cougars take on Gonzaga in Pullman where Tuesday's crowd is expected to be the largest at Friel Court since 11,463 watched No. 6 UCLA defeat Washington State 98-83, Feb. 11, 1995 ... Bennett has said the defense his father Dick is famous for is still a staple of the WSU program.Cougars are yielding 58.4 points per game, best in the Pac-10.
