Dec. 6, 2006
UCLA head women's volleyball coach Andy Banachowski has been named the Tachikara/AVCA Division I Pacific Region Coach of the Year, it was announced on Wednesday. Banachowski has coached the Bruins to a 31-3 record this season and UCLA is the No. 4 national seed in this year's NCAA Tournament.
UCLA finished tied for second in the Pac-10 this season, the best conference finish for the team since 1999. The Bruins won their first 20 matches this season and has been in the top-10 in ever CSTV/AVCA Division I Top 25 Coaches Poll this year, currently holding a No. 4 ranking.
The Bruins have 12 wins over other schools who have appeared in at least one Top 25 coaches poll and went 5-3 against the other Pac-10 schools currently ranked in the poll. The team's 31 wins this season is the most since 1994 when UCLA finished 32-4 and reached the NCAA Championship match.
This is Banachowski's 40th season at the helm of the UCLA women's volleyball program. He has won 1,035 matches and this is his first Tachikara/AVCA Division I Pacific Region Coach of the Year honor. He was named the Tachikara/AVCA Division I District Coach of the Year four times, in 1989, '92, '93 and '98.
UCLA returns to action on Friday night in the NCAA Regional Semifinals against No. 13 Oklahoma in Honolulu. The match is scheduled to begin at 4:30 pm local time, 6:30 pm Pacific Time.
