Three members of the UCLA women's volleyball team, senior middle blocker Nana Meriwether, sophomore setter Nellie Spicer and senior outside hitter Katie Carter, have earned AVCA All-Region honors, it was announced on Wednesday. Meriwether and Spicer were named to the Pacific Region first team while Carter earned Honorable Mention honors. All three are now eligible for the AVCA All-America team which will be announced on December 15, in Omaha.
Meriwether, a senior middle blocker from Potomac, Md., earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors three times this season, including earning AVCA/Sports Imports National Player of the Week notice on Sept. 5. For that national honor, Meriwether recorded the fourth-highest attack percentage in NCAA Division I history with at least 20 attacks (20K-1E-24TA). She also earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors on Oct. 23 and Nov. 6, and was named to the All-Tournament Team at all four of UCLA's tournaments, including MVP honors at the State Farm Bearcat Invitational, Hawaiian Airlines Classic and Hilton Garden Inn Greenbelt Invitational. No athlete in NCAA Division I history has ever led the final national statistical standings in two different categories for the same season. This is Meriwether's second selection to the AVCA Pacific Region team.
Spicer, a sophomore setter from Barrington, Ill., has piloted the Bruins to a team .270 attack percentage, a mark that ranks 15th among all NCAA Division I teams. Her individual average of 13.63 assists per game is second in the Pac-10 and eighth in the nation. Spicer earned All-Tournament honors at the Hilton Garden Inn Grenbelt Invitational and the Pioneer Classic, where she was named the Tournament MVP. This is Spicer's first selection to the AVCA Pacific Region team.
Carter, a senior outside hitter from Steamboat Springs, Colo., was named the Pac-10 Player of the Week for October 2 after UCLA posted home wins over Washington and Washington State.
