Zach Miller Named Walter Camp All-American

Dec. 8, 2006

ArizonaStateUniversity's junior tight end Zach Miller has been named a Walter Camp All-America selection, the Walter Camp Football Association announced Friday.

The Phoenix, Ariz. native has also been chosen as an American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) All-American, a Second-Team All-America choice by and, a First-Team All-Pac-10 selection, an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and was one of three finalists for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to the nation's top tight end.

On the season, Miller leads ASU in receptions (49), receiving yards (481) and touchdown catches (four), and is the school's all-time leading receiver among tight ends.

ASU has showcased 11 Walter Camp All-Americans throughout the team's history, the first of such honors were earned by the Sun Devils' all-time leading rusher, tailback Woody Green in 1973. Former consensus All-American defensive end Terrell Suggs was the most recent recipient of CampAll-America honors, doing so in 2002.  Miller is the first tight end in ASU history to be named to the Walter Camp All-America team.

The Walter Camp All-America team is selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 119 Division 1-A football schools and certified by UHY Advisors, a New Haven-based accounting firm.

Walter Camp, 'The Father of American Football,' first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.

Members of the 2006 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization's national awards banquet on January 13, 2007 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven

Miller and the Sun Devils will close out the 2006 season against the Hawai'i Warriors in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl on Dec. 24, ASU's third consecutive bowl game appearance.
