Beavers Top Western Oregon 71-58

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -Sasa Cuic had 17 points and six rebounds Monday in Oregon State's 71-58 nonconference win against Western Oregon.
Jack McGillis added 15 points and four steals for Oregon State (6-4). Jacob Mitchell had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds for Western Oregon (1-3).
The NCAA Division I Beavers could never quite put away the Division II Wolves of Monmouth, about 20 miles north of Corvallis.
Oregon State led 39-31 at halftime, and Western Oregon cut that to 44-39 on a free throw by Dominique DeWeese with 16:48 remaining. The Beavers went on a 9-2 run, capped by four points from McGillis to make it 51-41.
Western Oregon kept it close, with a Mitchell basket closing the Wolves to 59-52 with 7:20 left. Oregon State made 9 of 14 foul shots in the final seven minutes to hold on.
Oregon State finished the game 24 of 63 from the field, while Western Oregon was 23 of 47.
It was third of nine straight games at home for Oregon State, a schedule that matches the longest home stretch in school history, equaling a run in the 1949-50 season.
It was only the third game between the two baskeball programs, after two games held in the 1930s. Oregon State has won all three.
