Cardinal Heads to Reno Tournament of Champions
Dec. 15, 2006
Stanford, Calif. - After a week break to complete final exams, the Stanford wrestling team is back in action. The squad heads to Reno, Nev. next Wednesday to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions. The college portion of the tournament begins with pigtail rounds at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the day, with finals set to begin at 6 p.m. The 2006 tournament will be held at the Reno Downtown Convention Center.
Thirteen wrestlers will compete for the Cardinal, including StanfordâTMs two ranked wrestlers: No. 7 Tanner Gardner and No. 17 Josh Zupancic. Gardner boasts a 13-2 record at 125 pounds and has two top-four finishes already this season. Zupancic earned his first national ranking at 157 pounds last week, and has placed in all three tournaments he has competed in.
âoeReno is one of the toughest tournaments in the nation,â said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. âoeBecause our guys our coming off of finals and have not had structured training for the last week, itâTMs that much more challenging. Our guys have been working hard though, so weâTMll go out there and see what happens.â
The 29-team field includes four top-25 teams: No. 4 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Northwestern, No. 10 Central Michigan and No. 20 Cal Poly. The Cardinal will also get another chance to face Pac-10 competition, with nine of the ten conference squads participating.
Last season, the Cardinal had two wrestlers place at the tournament, with Gardner taking fifth and Ray Blake claiming fourth. Junior Scott Loescher, who came within one match of placing last year, will attempt to improve on his finish and place for the second time this season.
More information about the tournament is available at the Official Tournament Website.
