Juniors Tanner Gardner and Josh Zupancic placed for the Cardinal today in the second and final day of competition at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, N.C. Gardner, who now boasts a 20-3 record at 125 pounds, earned second place, while Zupancic placed in his fifth tournament of the season at 157 pounds, earning sixth. Stanford placed 18th in the 32-team field.

Gardner began the day with a decisive 8-1 win over Matthew Fisk of Lehigh in the Championship Quarterfinals and later topped No. 17 Javier Maldonado of Chattanooga, 5-0, in the Semifinal Round to earn a spot in the Championship. Gardner wrestled a close match with No. 2 Troy Nickerson of Cornell, but fell 3-0 to earn second place.

Zupancic opened up the second day of competition by avenging last week's loss to No. 20 Tyler Sherfey of Boise State. The Cardinal junior pulled out a 6-2 decision over Sherfey and earned the right to face top-seeded and seventh-ranked Matt Hill of Edinboro in the Championship Semifinals. Zupancic fell 15-6 to Hill and subsequently lost to No. 13 Mike Chandler of Missouri before injury defaulting in the fifth place match. Zupancic now boasts a 25-7 record on the year, and has placed in all five tournaments he has competed in.

Senior Brian Perry and freshman Zack Giesen came within one match of placing, but dropped quarterfinal matches to a pair of top-20 wrestlers to fall into the consolation bracket. Perry was later edged, 6-5, by No. 17 Jason Kiessling of Maryland, while Giesen fell to Jesse Strawn of Old Dominion.

'We didn't wrestle our best, but we made some errors that we can work on,' said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. 'Now we have some time to train and get ready for the dual meet season, which is the most important. We have gotten some great chances to see conference teams, but we're going to have to kick it up and improve to meet our year end goals.'
