Men's, Women's Swimming Return To Action

The No. 6 USC men's swimming and diving team and the No. 11 women's squad kick off the new year with a pair of home meets this week against Washington on Friday (Jan. 5) at 2 p.m. and against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (Jan. 6) at noon. Both are at McDonald's Stadium.

The Women of Troy are 3-1 overall (2-1 in Pac-10 competition) while the men's team is 3-0 (2-0).

The Washington women are 1-1 while the Husky men have yet to compete in a dual meet. The Gaucho men are 2-3 and the women are 2-5. Both of Washington's and UC Santa Barbara's squads are unranked.

Both USC teams are returning to action after about a five-week layoff. The men last competed at the Georgia Fall Invite on Dec. 1-3 while the women last raced on Nov. 30-Dec. 2 at the Texas Invitational.

Senior Kalyn Keller and sophomore Rebecca Soni are the first two Trojans to clock NCAA automatic times this year. Keller did it in the 500y free (4:43.58) at the Texas Invitational and Soni did it at the same meet in the 200y breast (2:09.39).

Keller also has NCAA consideration times in the 1650y free (16:30.59), 400y IM (4:19.62) and the 200y fly (team-best 1:59.76). Soni has NCAA consideration marks in the 200y IM (2:02.62), 400y IM (team-best 4:16.82) and the 100y breast (team-best 1:01.97).

Junior Brittany Allen has a pair of NCAA `B' cuts in the 1650y free (team-best 16:30.48) and 500y free (4:49.86) while junior Whitney Hentzen and freshman Kristina Rigterink have NCAA `B' cuts in both races as well. Rigterink also has an NCAA consideration time in the 400y IM.

Sophomore Katy Houston has an NCAA consideration mark and the team's best time in the 200y IM (2:01.12) and has NCAA consideration times in the 400y IM, 100y breast and 200y breast as well.

Junior Hayley McGregory, the school record holder in the 100y back, has NCAA consideration times in the 100y (54.84) and 200y back (1:57.95), both close to automatic times. The only other swimmer with NCAA consideration times in the backstroke is sophomore Kristen Lahey. She also tops the team in the 100y fly with an NCAA `B' cut of 54.03.

Other women's swimmers with NCAA consideration marks are Emily Goetsch (100y and 200y fly), junior Renee Viveros (200y fly), sophomore Missy McIntyre (100y breast), senior Kristina Sieper (100y and 200y breast), sophomore Rachael Waller (200y free) and freshman Krissy Forelli (200y free).

Only senior Larsen Jensen has clocked an NCAA automatic time for the men, a 4:17.59 in the 500y free, and his 15:28.19 in the 1650y free is an NCAA `B' cut and a team best. His 1:37.57 in the 200y free is also a `B' cut.

Junior Richard Gosper's 50y free of 19.85 at the Georgia Fall Invite is an NCAA consideration mark and the fastest by a Trojan in five years. Senior Sean Sussex has `B' cuts in the 50y (20.00), 100y free (43.92) and 200y free (1:37.93).

Sophomore Vanni Mangoni has USC's top times in both the 200y (1:48.40) and the 400y IM (3:48.59), both NCAA consideration times.

Senior Sam Masson, USC's record holder in the 100y fly, has the top time in the event this year (NCAA consideration, 47.39) while junior Bryce Elser has an NCAA `B' cut there as well (48.23). Junior Brandon Lovell (1:47.24) and Pac-10 record holder Viktor Bodrogi (1:47.36) have NCAA consideration times in the 200y fly.

USC 100y breast record holder Mihaly Flaskay has NCAA `B' cuts in the 100y (54.13) and the 200y breast (2:00.28) while sophomore Kazy Miyahara has the top time in the 200y breast (1:59.60).

Bodrogi (48.28) and Masson (48.44) each have NCAA `B' cuts in the 100y back and Bodrogi also has one in the 200y back (1:45.67).

USC All-American diver Michael Hilde and fellow NCAA championship qualifier Kenny Jenkins have also been consistent dual-meet scorers, challenging for first in both springboard events in each meet.
