Baseball America Tabs Stanford No. 31 In 2007 Preseason Top 50

Jan. 6, 2007

Durham, N.C. - Baseball America has tabbed Stanford as the No. 31 team in the nation in its 2007 preseason Top 50. The Cardinal had previously registered a No. 23 ranking in the first 2007 preseason poll released by Collegiate Baseball on December 22, 2006. Stanford is scheduled to open its 2007 campaign with a three-game set February 2-4 (7 pm, 6 pm, 12 pm, PT) at Cal State Fullerton before hosting Fresno State in its first home series of the season February 9-11 (5 pm, 1 pm, 1 pm, PT). The Cardinal begins official team practice for the 2007 campaign at Sunken Diamond on Friday, January 12.

'It's always nice to get some recognition in the preseason polls,' said Stanford head coach Mark Marquess. 'But, we're a long way from even starting the season, so we'll have to see how things work out once we get going.'

Stanford is coming off a 2006 season in which the Cardinal made its 13th straight postseason appearance and came within two victories of the College World Series before falling to eventual CWS champion Oregon State at the NCAA Corvallis Super Regional. The Cardinal won the NCAA Austin Regional in dominating fashion, knocking off defending national champion and No. 3 national seed Texas in the process.

Stanford finished the 2006 campaign with a 33-27 overall record and an 11-13 mark in the Pac-10 to tie for fifth place in the conference. The Cardinal was ranked 15th at the end of the 2006 campaign by Collegiate Baseball. USA Today had Stanford at No. 16 in its final poll, while the Cardinal checked in with the NCBWA at No. 18 and Baseball America and Rivals.com at No. 19.

Stanford's 38-player roster in 2007 includes 26 players from last year's team as well as 12 newcomers. The Cardinal has a total of 18 letterwinners. Eight position players have made at least 20 starts in a season at Stanford, while the Cardinal has a pair of pitchers back on the mound that finished last season in the rotation as well as eight of the 12 pitchers who saw action on the hill for the Cardinal in 2006.

Stanford has been involved in NCAA postseason play 27 times. The Cardinal has won a pair of national titles (1987, '88) in its 15 CWS appearances and been runners-up on three other occasions (2000, '01, '03), the latter during a recent school record run of five straight trips to Omaha (1999-2003). Stanford has also won five NCAA Super Regional crowns (1999, 2000, '01, '02, '03), 14 Regional titles (1982, '83, '85, '87, '88, '90, '95, '97, '99, 2000, '01, '02, '03, '06) and 20 conference championships (1924, '25, '27, '31, '50, '53, '66, '67, '83, '84, '85, '87, '90, '94, '97, '98, '99, 2000, '03, '04) including shared and Pac-10 Southern Division titles.

Rice has been ranked No. 1 in both preseason polls.

Stanford has a total of seven opponents (Arizona State, Cal State Fullerton, Oregon State, San Francisco, Texas, UCLA, USC) on its 2007 regular season schedule that are ranked in at least one of the two polls.
