Jan. 8, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--ARIZONA STATE freshman guard Dymond Simon has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 1-7, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Simon hit her shooting stride last week, powering a Sun Devil offense that generated 88.5 points on average in two home wins over Washington State and Washington. The freshman guard averaged 20 points per game and shot 78.9 percent (15-of-19) from the field in the two wins.
Against the Cougars, Simon had a career night, leading Arizona State with 24 points on 9-of-11 (.818) shooting as the Sun Devils rolled to an 89-44 victory. Simon's 24 points represented the highest single-game point total for a Sun Devil this season. Simon shot 4-of-5 from long range and also added five assists and two steals on the night. All of Simon's numbers were accumulated during only 19 minutes of playing time.
Facing Washington next, Simon helped spark ASU's second-half comeback that resulted in an 88-83 win, ending Washington's nine-game winning streak and saddling the Huskies with their first Conference loss. Simon provided 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field and grabbed three rebounds.
Over Arizona State's first five Conference games, Simon is shooting 57.5% from the field, fifth best in the Conference, and is averaging 11 points per game off the bench in Pac-10 play.
The Sun Devils (14-2, 4-1 Pac-10) travel to the Oregon schools this week.
This is the first career Player of the Week award for Simon and the 28th all-time for Arizona State.
