Jan. 9, 2007
Carson, Calif. - Cardinal sophomore Marisa Abegg of the Stanford women's soccer team will train with the Under-21 Women's National Team later this month when the team holds its first training camp of the new year. The Stanford defender was one of 26 players and six defenders selected to participate in the camp, which will be held Jan. 13-20 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
Abegg helped lead one of the top defensive units in the country in 2006, starting all 23 games for the Cardinal back line that posted one of the top-10 shutout percentages in the nation (.652). She also helped the team to one of the lowest goals-against averages in the nation (.55) and captained the squad that advanced to the NCAA Third Round. The Lake Oswego, Ore. native is one three Pac-10 players on the U-21 roster.
Abegg and the U-21s will scrimmage the full Women's National Team in a pair of matches on January 15 at the Home Depot Center at 12 and 2 p.m., the day before the Women's National Team leaves the Four Nations Tournament in China.
