Jan. 9, 2007

BOSTON, MA. - Susie Babos, the reigning NCAA singles champion, is in a great position to make a run for another title this season. The junior is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation in singles and is currently No. 2 in doubles with partner, senior Zsuzsanna Fodor. Fodor's singles ranking is No. 32.

The Golden Bears just missed the top 10 as a team. They're currently ranked No. 11, just five points behind No. 10 Duke.

Babos and Fodor weren't the only two Cal players contributing to the team's high mark. Freshman Nina Henkel, coming off a very successful fall campaign, is currently ranked No. 14. The top recruit who won the ITA Northwest Regional in October, also placed high in doubles, as Henkel and her partner, sophomore Daron Moore, stand at No. 12 in the nation.

Juniors Cristina Visico and Marion Ravelojaona also earned high rankings by the ITA. Visico stand at No. 27, while Ravelojaona is ranked No. 34. Two other ranked Bears were junior Stephanie Kusano (74) and sophomore Bojana Bobusic (77).

Cal opens the spring season this weekend when it hosts the Cal Winter Invitational. The Bears will compete against Cal Poly, Saint Mary's and Fresno State. The three-day tournament begins Friday at 11 a.m.
