California's Dana Vollmer Named Pac-10 Women's Swimmer of the Month

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - CALIFORNIA swimmer Dana Vollmer has been named Pac-10 Women's Swimmer of the Month for December, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Vollmer, a sophomore from Granbury, Texas, had a remarkable December as she swam five individual automatic NCAA Championship qualifying times and taking part in three automatic NCAA Championship qualifying relays, Dec. 1-3, at the Georgia Invitational. In addition, Vollmer swam one individual provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., where she helped the Golden Bears take second place.
The Olympic gold medalist walked away with three individual crowns in the 50 freestyle (22.68), the 100 butterfly (52.71), and the 200 fly, all of which were NCAA `A' marks. Vollmer then went on to take fourth in the 500 free, setting an NCAA `B' mark with a time of 4:46.51.
In addition, Vollmer also led off Cal's winning 400-freestyle relay in a 100-free time of 49.23 and led off the Bear's second-place 800-freestyle relay with a 200-free mark of 1:46.04, both times also being NCAA `A' times. Vollmer helped that 400-freestyle relay along with the winning 200 and 400-medley relays swim automatic NCAA Championship qualifying times in Athens, clocking times at 3:17.77 (400-free), 1:39.12 (200-medley) and 3:36.05 (400-medley).
Furthermore, she swam on the winning 200-free relay and the second place 800-freestyle relay that clocked NCAA `B' qualifying times of 1:31.35 (200-free) and 7:10.52 (800-free).
This is the first monthly honor for Vollmer and California's third Swimmer of the Month all-time.
