Huskies Drop Barnburner At Stanford, 78-77

Jan. 11, 2007

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) - Stanford rallied at home Thursday night behind Anthony Goods' 19 points, downing Washington 78-77.

Jon Brockman had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Justin Dentmon scored 15 points for the Huskies, who went nearly 4 1/2 minutes without a point late in their fourth loss in five conference games after a 10-1 preseason.

Lawrence Hill scored 18 points and converted a three-point play with 41 seconds left for the Cardinal (10-4, 2-2 Pac-10), who trailed for most of the second half before holding on in the tense final seconds against the Huskies (11-5, 1-4).

Neither team led by more than seven points in an entertaining game.

Robin Lopez scored a career-high 17 points and his 7-foot twin Brook had 12 for the Cardinal, with the brothers combining for seven blocked shots.

Washington led 71-66 on Dentmon's layup with 5 1/2 minutes left, but couldn't score in the next 4:17. Stanford took a 72-71 lead on Goods' free throws with 2:30 to play, but Dentmon drove for a three-point play with 1:15 left to put Washington back in front.

Lawrence Hill then missed a tough shot for Stanford, but stole the ball and hit an unlikely leaner while being fouled with 41 seconds left. His free throw put the Cardinal back in front, 75-74.

Pondexter hit one of two free throws to tie it as Hill fouled out - yet Appleby then quickly fouled Goods, who put Stanford back up by two. Phil Nelson's pass into the paint was deflected and stolen, and Taj Finger hit another free throw before Brockman tipped in a missed 3-pointer in the final second.

Stanford's twin freshman 7-footers started together for the second straight game and provided some lively inside action with Brockman and Spencer Hawes, the Huskies' own freshman 7-footer, who had six points on 3-of-12 shooting before fouling out on Hill's last-minute shot.

Pondexter, the Lopez twins' teammate at Fresno's San Joaquin Memorial High School last season, scored nine points on 2-of-10 shooting.
