Swimming and Diving Faces California, Stanford in Final Home Meets of 2006-07 Season

TEMPE, Ariz. -

ArizonaStateUniversity's swimming and diving teams prepare for a challenging weekend of Pac-10 Conference action, as ASU's No. 23 women's team will host No. 4 California Friday at 1 p.m., and the women and No. 21 Sun Devil men will host Stanford (No. 1 women, No. 2 men) Saturday. The men's meet begins at noon, with the women's to follow at 2 p.m.

 

The Sun Devil women kicked of the team's 2007 portion of its schedule in impressive fashion, earning a pair of decisive victories, the first coming against the University of British Columbia on Sat., Jan. 5 (137-49) and ASU followed that win up with another against Pac-10 Conference rival Oregon State (180-82) on Sat., Jan. 6.

 

Junior Caitlin Andrew and sophomore Jen Beckberger continued to lead ASU, recording a strong weekend of action.

 

In competition against the UBC Thunderbirds, Andrew and Beckberger each won two events, as Andrew took first in the 200 IM (2:04.51) and 100 fly (55.12), while Beckberger won the 50 free (23.43) and 100 free (51.33).

 

Junior Lindsey Brown (200 free), junior Sarah Fischer (500 free) and senior ChristineCreek (100 breast) also earned individual victories against British Columbia.

 

Against the Beavers, Andrew and sophomore Beckberger each notched a pair of individual victories, as Andrew won the 100 back (56.31) and the 100 fly (54.50), while Beckberger took first in the 100 free (51.51) and 200 free (1:51.09). 

 

Freshman Jess Perazzo added a victory in the 50 free, her first individual first-placed finish of the season.

 

ASU's men also defeated UBC (117-67), however in three-team dual meet action on Saturday ASU fell to California (185-115) and Michigan (160-140).

 

Junior CJ Nuess paced ASU's effort against British Columbia, winning the 200 IM (1:52.33) and 100 breast (57.47), while junior Steve Neuwert won the 50 free (20.40) and freshman Ante Cvitkovic took first in the 100 back (49.95) as did sophomore Sean Boyle in the 100 fly (50.11)

 

In Saturday's action, Neuwert and Nuess led the way for the Sun Devils, as Neuwert took first in the 50 free (20.27) and Nuess won the 400 IM (3:52.82).

 

Redshirt freshman diver Micky Benedetti also added to ASU's scoring effort, earning the top 1m (362.10) and 3m (362.03) diving scores of the meet.

 

Saturday marks ASU's final home meet of the 2006-07 season, and the Sun Devil men and women will travel to Tucson, Ariz., to face the University of Arizona on Feb. 3 in the final regular season meet of the year.
