Cal Starts 2007 and The Winter Invitational With Success
Jan. 12, 2007
BERKELEY - The New Year began the same way 2006 ended for the No. 11 California women's tennis team, with the Golden Bears turning in another successful performance. In day one of the Cal Winter Invitational, Cal won seven of eight singles matches Friday at the Channing Tennis Courts against Saint Mary's. Earlier in the day, the Bears won three out of four doubles matches against Cal Poly.
Reigning NCAA singles champion Susie Babos, currently ranked No. 3 in the ITA singles rankings, turned in another dominating performance as she defeated Jessica Hoath, 6-0, 6-1. Babos and partner senior Zsuzsanna Fodor notched another doubles victory as well. The No. 2 ranked doubles tandem knocked off Carol Erickson and Steffi Wong, 8-4. Fodor, last season's Pac-10 singles champion, defeated Aude Lambert, 6-4, 6-0, in her singles match.
All of the seven Cal singles victories came in two sets. Junior Marion Ravelojaona was tested in her match against Erin Young before eventually getting the win, 7-5, 6-4. Juniors Stephanie Kusano, Cristina Visico and sophomores Claire Ilcinkas and Bojana Bobusic each won their matches decisively.
The Cal Winter Invitational continues tomorrow through Sunday. The Bears will play the rest of their matches at the Hellman Tennis Center. Tomorrow, Cal faces Fresno State in doubles at 11 a.m. Later in the afternoon, the Bears will take on Cal Poly in singles action.
