Cardinal Begins Play in Sherwood Cup

The Cardinal men's tennis team will begin play in the Sherwood Cup today at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. Stanford will send seven players to the tournament, which includes 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams. �The tournament continues through Monday.

Competing for the Cardinal this weekend will be freshman Kevin Kaiser, senior Eric McKean, freshman Paul Morrissey, junior Blake Muller, senior David Ryan, freshman Richard Wire and sophomore Jeff Zeller.

Singles play gets under way today as all seven Cardinal will be in action. Wire, from Loughton, Essex, England, will face defending NCAA Champion Ben Kohlloefel of UCLA, the tournament's top seed.

The Cardinal will be challenged in other matches as well. Ryan is slated to face Michael Kota of Baylor, the tournament's second seed, Morrissey will face Matija Zgaga of Baylor, the fourth seed, Kaiser will play Haythem Abid of UCLA, seeded fifth in the tournament while Zeller will face the sixth seed, Dejan Cvetkovic of USC.

Muller will open the tournament against Mathiew Dehaine of UCLA, the tournament's seventh seed. The only Cardinal not opening the tournament against a seeded player is Eric McKean, who will play Stanley Sarapinich of Boise State.

The doubles draw has not yet been determined.
