Softball Opens Practice Monday

Jan. 12, 2007

BERKELEY - The California softball program begins its official team practices for the 2007 season on Monday, Jan. 15, at 2:30 p.m. on the Levine-Fricke Field.

'I'm really excited about the 2007 season,' said Cal head coach Diane Ninemire, who returns to the dugout for her 20th season. 'We have a wealth of experience returning and a corps of exciting young players. It should be a high octane offense which possesses a balance of power and speed. We (coaching staff) feel that our three pitchers will provide key experience in the circle to lead our team to another successful season.'

The Golden Bears return seven position starters, including lone senior Alex Sutton and sophomore pitcher Lauren Frankiewicz. Sutton posted a .352 batting average last season and ranked second on the team in doubles (12) and RBI (36). Frankiewicz finished with a 12-3 record in the circle last season with a 2.23 ERA in 119.1 innings pitched.

The 2007 squad also features seven freshmen (Britney La Rosa, Shannon Houston, Christina Schallig, Marissa Drewrey, Vernae Sevilla, Bernice Masaniai and Taylor Kelley), four juniors (Julie Meyer, Erika Racklin, Jessica Moore, and Katie Vickers) and four sophomores (Frankiewicz, Morgan Siegel, Carly Winger, and Gina Leomiti).

California begins the season at the Campbell-Cartier Classic Feb. 9-11, hosted by San Diego State. The Bears open with Kansas on Feb. 9 at 2 p.m., followed by San Diego State at 7 p.m. Cal concludes the competition versus Massachusetts (11:30 a.m.) and UC Santa Barbara (7 p.m.) on Feb. 10.

The Bears went 48-14 last season, advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals in Corvallis, Ore., and finished with a No. 9 national ranking. California has appeared in seven of the last eight NCAA College World Series and captured a championship in 2002.
