BERKELEY - In the second day of the Cal Winter Invitational, the No. 11 California women's tennis team won all seven of its singles matches against Cal Poly, Saturday afternoon at the Hellman Tennis Center.
Six of the Golden Bears' singles victories came in two sets. Junior Susie Babos struggled a bit in her match against Carol Erickson. After winning the first set, 6-2, Erickson came back and won the second set, 7-6 (5). Babos jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, before Erickson rallied to cut the lead to 3-2. The reigning NCAA singles champion would take control and win the deciding set, 6-3, to win the match.
Junior Stephanie Kusano was tested in the second set of her match against Diane Filip. After Kusano won the first set 6-1, Filip held a 5-4 lead in the next set before Kusano rallied back and won, 7-5.
Senior Zsuzsanna Fodor and junior Marion Ravelojaona each won their matches by the score of 6-1, 6-1. Following a tough first set, freshman Nina Henkel rebounded to shut out Steffi Wong in the second set, as she won the match, 6-4, 6-0.
In doubles, Cal won three of its four matches against Fresno State. The only defeat on the day was the second-ranked tandem of Babos and Fodor falling to Anastasia Petukhova and Renata Kucerkova, 8-4. Henkel and Kusano rebounded after their loss on Friday to defeat Melanie Gloria and Vanessa Heroux, 9-7.
The Cal Winter Invitational concludes tomorrow. The Bears square off against Saint Mary's in doubles at 11 a.m. Later in the afternoon, Cal faces Fresno State in singles action.
